A Pew Research study has
reported that Americans ages 18 to 29 are typically less religious than
older generations.  Pastor Quinn Rodgers hopes to change this apparently
indifferent attitude toward religion.  This is why he opened the
Generation One hip hop church last week.
You won’t find a pipe organ, or
even sit in a pew. Pastor Quinn Rodger’s says Generation One is geared
specifically towards reaching a younger and un-churched generation.
The Huntersville, North Carolina
church will not hold your average service of choir hymns.  Rodgers
thinks that it will take some fresh, new approaches to reach the younger
crowds.  ”We’re trying to reach the un-churched, the de-churched, the
folks who have given up on church and are looking for something
different,” Rodgers told WBTV.
The church services will instead incorporate beats, rhymes, and other aspects of hip hop culture, but with a sanctified twist.
“We’ve taken the hip-hop culture
and we’ve extracted all the negative connotations out of it and we’ve
deposited solid Christian doctrine in there,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers was inspired to use hip
hop influences based on the “consciousness” of earlier hip hop.  “It
brought about a social and economic awareness that challenged
individuals to examine themselves and change,” explained Rodgers.  “And
when I look at the church, we are challenged as Christians to do the
same with our walk with Christ.”
“18 to 40, we can’t get those
people into church because the traditional stuff isn’t working anymore,”
added Juanita Rann-Scott, an affiliate of Generation One.
Generation One’s service is held every Saturday evening at 5PM.
The infusion of hip hop with
Christianity has been gaining popularity within the past few years.
Rappers like LeCrae and Bizzle have music that revolves around their
religious beliefs, yet they have both gained a considerable amount of
attention from mainstream music outlets.
